- “Get URL/Netscape META” BBEdit/EasyView Extension
- --------------------------------------------
- Version 1.2 of February/March/June 95
-
- This is a second-generation modification of Akif M. Eyler's "Get
- URL" extension. I started with the nice modification done by Hans
- R. Schelling to use Netscape, and added automatic loading of
- gopher:// and http:// URL's instead of an intermediary "Click Here"
- screen. It requires Netscape version 1.1 later for the META codes.
- It doesn't check the version, so if you have Netscape 1.0, it won't
- tell you that it won't work. For 1.0 users, get a copy of Hans
- Schelling's version of GetURL or the latest Netscape. Other than
- this, it is functionally identical to the previous versions.
- Complaints/comments about the Netscape autoloading should be
- directed to me, others to the original authors. I've checked the
- extension, and don't think there's any way it could damage your
- computer. If anything happens, I am not liable.

- Here is the documentation from "GetURL/Netscape" and the original
- "Get URL":
-
- >This is a modification of Akif M. Eylers “Get URL”
- >BBEdit/EasyView Extension. The only difference to his
- >version is that it calls Netscape for “gopher:” and
- >“http:” strings instead of MacWeb.
- >In EasyView, you can just command-click inside an URL string
- >to activate Anarchie or Netscape. In BBEdit, you have to select
- >the string first, then choose “Get URL” from the Extensions menu.
- >Netscape doesn’t open the desired connection directly. You have
- >to click the hypertext “Click here to get that URL”. You can only
- >open one connection at a time; every "Get that URL.html"
- >overwrites the previous one. The reference in Netscape gets
- >actualized automatically.
- >
- >Be sure to delete the original "Get URL" from the EasyView or
- >BBEdit extensions folder when using this version.
- >
- >From the original documentation by Akif M. Eyler:
- >
- >>This extension calls various Internet software to decode
- >>URL’s. Usable from BBEdit and Easy View.
- >>
- >>Place the extension into your “BBEdit Extensions” and/or
- >>“EV Extensions” folder. You don’t need to restart the
- >>machine, this is not a system extension.
- >>
- >>“Get URL” recognizes 4 URL strings currently:
- >>* ftp:
- >>* /info-mac/
- >>* gopher:
- >>* http:
- >>The first two go to Anarchie and the last two to MacWeb.
- >>
- >>Anarchie will fetch directly from an Info-Mac mirror, when
- >>the insertion point is on a file name that begins with
- >>“/info-mac/”, another good reason to read the digests with
- >>Easy View. (Set your I-M mirror in Anarchie Prefs)
- >>
- >>These strings and their behavior are configurable with ResEdit.
- >>You can add/delete/modify STR# resources.
- >>
- >>Full URL: Click within any URL that begins with “ftp:”, “http:”,
- >>“gopher:”, or “/info-mac/” and choose the extension from the
- >>menu. (It helps to assign a command key)
- >>
- >>Partial URL: If you need part of the URL, just select it first.
- >>Be sure your selection begins with one of strings above.
- >>
- >>I hope to make Easy View 2.6 to respond to option-click with
- >>this extension.
- >>
- >>
- >>This extension is dedicated to
- >>
- >>* Adam Engst, who wrote in TidBITS#211
- >>
- >>> I’m looking forward to the day when you can select a URL
- >>> in TidBITS, hit a hot key or select an item from a menu,
- >>> and have Anarchie snag the file for you instantly.
- >>
- >>* Peter Lewis, who told me in a private message
- >>
- >>> Get yourself MacTCP and get on the network
- >>> -- life’s too short for anything less.
- >>
- >>* and John Norstad, who invented option-click and told me
- >> how to do it easily.
